It’s known that the best way to keep convicts from returning to prison is to ensure they find a job and contribute to the economy. It gives them a pride they may not have felt prior to their prison stint.
Standing beside President Trump, Kim Kardashian West, the notoriously famous-for-being-famous reality star, announced her partnership with the ride sharing company Lyft to assist in reducing inmate levels across the country.
The goal is to give over 5,000 soon-to-be released prisoners Lyft rides to job interviews, ideally seamlessly bringing them back into society and keep them out of prison in the future.
This is part of a broader effort called #cut50, a prison reform effort on a national and local scale to present former inmates with a real second chance to turn their lives around.
“My whole journey with criminal justice reform started about a year ago when I came to see the president after speaking to Ivanka and Jared, who really fought for me to get here,” said Kim.
“I really spent so much time going to different prisons because I really had no connection to anybody on the inside and really just felt like for me, I’m at the place in my life that I wanted to make a difference and just wanted to do the right thing, but I didn’t know how or what to do or even really what was going on.”
She’s been in meetings at the White House, petitioning governors and visiting prisons across the country to assist in the #cut50 efforts.
It’s sad that stories like these don’t make a land a bigger spotlight. Ms. Kardashian isn’t just giving lip service to an issue. She’s actually fighting for it.
